I asked my system administrator to update the hosts.allow file on my server to allow my new IP Address. Recently, Singtel upgraded me to their 1000 Broadband on Mobile plan. The change in IP is quite expected. My sys admin updated the hosts.allow file but also went to change the ssh login scheme to the key-based authentication. It’s nice that he is hardening the box but i wasn’t sure how to do the ssh login now.
His reply to enquiry on the steps to the new login scheme came in the form of PuTTy keys(.ppk extension) and some steps. I am no longer a windows user so i had no choice but to try and do it Mac style. Quote from shinchi: It Just Works. Not so.
First i need to try and change the keys to openssh keys. I am using OpenSSH which is provided with Terminal.app. Problem is ppk work only on Putty. So i needed to see if Mac can run Putty. You can do that by installing Putty with MacPorts.
% sudo port install putty
Once you have PuTTy installed, PuTTy-gen is what you need to change the ppk keys to openssh.
% puttygen <putty key>.ppk -O private-openssh -o <your openssh key>.ssh
Now with my new openssh key, i can now login to my server with
% ssh <username>@<server ip or hostname> -i <my openssh key>.ssh
Well i got lazy to enter the -i all the time so i renamed the file to id_rsa. But i wonder if this is safe. =/

Been wanting to get my own svn repository done. Finally got down to doing it a couple of weeks ago on my Bluehost account. Since i am paying so much for a webhost, i thought it would be so cool to have my very own svn on my Bluehost.

Technology is so amazing. I was telling myself that it would be cool to find a phone that can become a hotspot. And then this link pops up in Facebook.

Damn.. two commands that are so close and one has the ultimate effect of deleting all your cronjob. Guess which one… I learnt two things; one, better know what is the delete command and two, make sure you back up.

Thought i tried Flock one more when i heard it is finally reaching version 1.1. I am amazed by all the new features. I love integration of web tools and services that i use; del.icio.us, Flickr, Facebook, Youtube and Wordpress. The feature that i really want most out of it is a better support for Wordpress categories. Had to strike this out when i realised when i could choose my categories when i publish my post. Cool. Flock has certainly won me over.

You can sync your Facebook friends’ info with FacebookSync. It works pretty seamless and the coolest thing is that it updates contact photos too.
Something which i thought was useful for this is the address, birthday updates for all my friends. Cool!

Been waiting for a useful 3.5G mobile broadband plan for myself. For the past 7 mths or so, i have been on a $75 unlimited 2.5G plan. Studying into my out of home internet activity, i find myself not fully utilising the unlimited despite having the freedom. Singtel had a huge fair at civic plaza, drawing people to their mio offerings. They also had a new offering for their Broadband on Mobile. A 2 month free subscription, free data sim card, free usb modem/$100 off a mobile phone.
To cut the long story short, i am pretty appalled by the support they gave to mac users. For my other fellow mac evangelists/zealots, here’s how to connect your “new” huawei E220 usb modem to your mac (leopard only). If you notice the package of the modem is a little confusing, a installation cd is present but it only contains the mac installer while the instructions only talked about windows installation. You will realise that the windows installation is stored in the usb modem. Simple for windows people.
